Bought Your Loft - What Next? Paint!

PaintSo you bought a loft and it’s everything you dreamed. Well not everything you dreamed - it’s not decorated yet. If you purchased a true loft, there is a lot of work to be done. It’s now time to start thinking about storage solutions and space planning and my favorite part, color!

Fortunately, if you can paint yourself, paint is cheap, but don’t use cheap paint (the difference is noticeable). With the vast array of colors out there, I am sure you can find something to fit your personality and style. However, please don’t take your urban loft and make it look like an apartment. Now is truly the time to get creative! There are several good brands to choose from here are my favorite three top choices. I like to use Behr Premium Paint found at your local Home Depot. I’ve never seen a color turn out so true. There is also American Tradition found at Lowes; which has some new exciting colors.

What you should also know is that paint isn’t just about the color it’s also about the finish - from Flat (clean) to High Gloss (you will need some sunglass no matter what color you choose). For a nice clean look, choose a flat sheen. Flat paints will also hide any flaws you may have in your walls giving you a absolutely flawless look. To have fun with lighting, choose an eggshell finish or a nice matte. You’ll get illuminating glows from all of your lighting and it will add character. Another good brand of paint to try is Sherwin-Williams that also serves beautiful color and finishes as well.

In the Bedroom
Experiment with accent walls that compliment a suttle color in your furniture peace. In a bedroom, I always recommend painting the wall at the head of your bed. Choose a color that’s fabulous and full of drama! Paint the remaining walls a soothing color. You’ll create all the color and drama as a backdrop for your awesome bed linens, while waking up and falling asleep to soothing palettes on surrounding walls.

In the Living /Great Room
Go for the gusto and paint your biggest wall for the boldest statement. Even go for the unexpected. Remember, your loft should reflect your personality. If you chose a loft that was full of rich history and character, why not restore paint colors from the original history of the space in an unconventional and contemporary manner.

In the Kitchen
Energy! The kitchen is generally the hub of activity in your space. I should be full of energy. Vibrant paint colors of cobalt blues, firey reds and oranges will kick it up a notch! Be inspired to cook in your kitchen around all that energy! Remember soft pastels are for country cottages. Be urban, flex copper and stainless steel thoughout, and then compliment it with accessories!
