Urban Parking - No Such Thing

Tight Parking

At the heart of Urban Living is the fact that there is no such thing as parking. I remember coming home one very cold winter night to my friends urban abode after hanging at the club until 4am, looking for a parking space for at least an hour in the city of Hyde Park, Illinois. I just got my first real taste of the downside of Urban Living.

Normally when you buy a home, your parking space is generally included. You get a garage, a driveway, and in most condo situations, you get a number spot in a private lot. But on this occassion, we had none of the above and let me tell you, running  along at 4am when it’s at least 10 below zero looking for a parking spot is surely not the finale to great night at the club with friends. Mind you, we finally found a spot two blocks away and around a corner. Unfortunately, this was not an area that had parking structures, or paid parking lots. It was pure street parking. Most of it meter time, which meant you have to be up at 7am to move it before receiving an unwelcomed parking ticket. This was a night I would have forked out the $32 bucks for an overnight parking spot at this point.

Something uncommonly thought of by the surburban transitioner to Urban Living is the parking situation or lack there of in this lifestyle. You’re lucky if you get one park spot, and your guests (unless they all live in the same building as you do), we’re more often than not skip the visit due to the parking.  When searching for your urban oasis, take into account the “parking.” Be mindful of how much entertaining you do, and is your parking spot including in the price of your home. Some greedy property owners tend to want to sell you a parking spot in your own building for an additional amount of money.  HOW RUDE!!
